Uesugi Shrine & Yonezawa Beef

📍 Yamagata, Yonezawa

A dignified shrine on the moated site of Yonezawa Castle, honoring the warlord Uesugi Kenshin — and the gateway to one of Japan's three great wagyu brands, Yonezawa beef, grilled and sizzling all over town.

The castle town of Yonezawa, tucked in Yamagata’s southern basin, was the seat of the powerful Uesugi clan. Where their castle once stood, ringed by a moat and old trees, now sits Uesugi Shrine, dedicated to the legendary warlord Uesugi Kenshin — calm, dignified, and steeped in samurai history.

Why It’s Interesting

It’s two pleasures in one stop. The shrine and moated park offer a peaceful walk through feudal history (with a treasure museum and, in early May, a costumed warrior festival). And then there’s the eating: Yonezawa is the home of Yonezawa beef, one of Japan’s three great wagyu brands — intensely marbled, melt-in-the-mouth beef served all over town as steak, sukiyaki, and unpretentious beef bowls. History for the grown-ups, beef for everyone.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round. Late April rings the moat with cherry blossom; early May brings the Uesugi Festival’s samurai procession.

Getting There

Bus or taxi from Yonezawa Station (on the Yamagata Shinkansen) to the Matsugasaki castle park, then graze your way through the beef shops.
