The Tochigi city that eats more gyoza than anywhere in Japan — dozens of specialist dumpling shops, a friendly rivalry with Hamamatsu, and a beloved stone statue of a gyoza wrapped in its own dumpling skin.

Every Japanese city has a local dish; Utsunomiya built an identity. The Tochigi capital is, by its own proud reckoning, the gyoza capital of Japan, locked in a good-natured national rivalry with Hamamatsu over which city eats the most dumplings per household.

Why It’s Interesting

Around the station, dozens of specialist gyoza shops turn out plate after plate of crisp, juicy dumplings — pan-fried, boiled, and deep-fried — for a few hundred yen apiece, a cheap and joyful grazing crawl. The city leans all the way in, right down to a slightly absurd, much-photographed stone Gyoza Statue: a figure demurely wrapped in its own dumpling skin. It’s food as civic pride, and it’s delicious.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round — it’s a city of restaurants. Come hungry and visit two or three shops to compare styles.

Getting There

Dead easy: the gyoza shops cluster around Utsunomiya Station, a shinkansen stop, and pair perfectly with the nearby Oya stone sights.
