Mount Chokai (Dewa Fuji)

Rising almost straight out of the Japan Sea at Yamagata’s northern edge, Mount Chokai is so beautifully symmetrical that locals nicknamed it “Dewa Fuji.” At 2,236 metres, it’s the second-highest peak in Tohoku and one of its most striking sights from miles around.

Why It’s Interesting

It’s a mountain for every level. Serious hikers tackle the long trails to the crater rim through alpine flower meadows that bloom in July and August, often crossing snowfields that survive well into summer — a surreal thrill in the heat. But you don’t have to summit to enjoy it: at the base, Motodaki Fukuryusui is an enchanting spot where icy spring water bursts straight out of mossy volcanic rock into a series of falls, staying cold and refreshing through the hottest August day. Cool air, snow patches, and clear water make Chokai a perfect summer antidote to the lowland heat.

Best Time to Visit

Summer to autumn (roughly July–October) for hiking and the meadows; the lower Motodaki falls are a cool, easy visit anytime in season.

Easiest by car to the trailheads or Motodaki; bus and taxi connect from Yuza and Sakata.
