Akagawa Fireworks Festival
📍 Yamagata, Tsuruoka
Billed as 'Japan's most moving fireworks show': on one August night, 12,000 fireworks are launched in choreographed bursts synced to music across a 700-metre stretch of the Akagawa river in Tsuruoka — one of Tohoku's very best hanabi.
Japan takes its summer fireworks seriously, and few shows are more revered than the Akagawa Fireworks Festival in Tsuruoka, which openly aims to be “Japan’s most moving fireworks display.”
Why It’s Interesting
On one mid-August night, the nation’s top pyrotechnicians launch around 12,000 fireworks along a vast 700-metre stretch of the Akagawa riverbank, building to a grand finale choreographed to music. It’s less a backyard fireworks night than a full orchestral performance in the sky — waves of color and light timed to a soundtrack, reflected in the river. It regularly tops fans’ rankings of Japanese hanabi, and for a family in Yamagata in August, it’s an unforgettable evening.
Best Time to Visit
One evening in mid-August — the 2026 show is scheduled for Saturday, August 15. Confirm the date and, ideally, book a riverside seat in advance.
Getting There
Take the shuttle bus from Tsuruoka Station to the riverbank; roads jam badly, so skip the car and arrive early for the best spot.
