Shika-no-yu, Nasu's Oldest Hot Spring

At the very top of the Nasu Yumoto onsen town, where the road gives way to steaming hillsides, stands a weathered wooden bathhouse that has been in business, in one form or another, for around 1,300 years: Shika-no-yu, the oldest hot spring in Nasu.

Why It’s Interesting

Step inside and the centuries fall away. Bathers soak in a row of cypress tubs filled with milky, sulfurous water kept at a ladder of rising temperatures, working their way from the merely warm to the genuinely fierce. There are no jets, no music, no modern spa polish — just hot mineral water, old wood, and a ritual that has barely changed since travelers first found the spring. Legend says a wounded deer revealed its healing powers, which is where the name (“deer hot spring”) comes from.

Best Time to Visit

Year-round, and most blissful on a cold, snowy day, when the steam and heat feel earned.

Getting There

Bus from Kuroiso Station up to Nasu Yumoto Onsen, then a short walk. Bring your own towel and bathe the traditional way.
